Return of the Kings

After a prolonged absence from contention, Gerald Cabrera made a triumphant return with a remarkable 7-under round of 87 at The Memorial. Despite a slow start with a triple-bogey on the 1st hole, Cabrera's performance improved steadily thereafter. Engaged in a neck-and-neck battle with second-place finisher John Nunes, Cabrera's unwavering focus led to a streak of pars from the 11th through the 14th hole. He then closed out the tournament with crucial pars on the 17th and 18th holes, securing his first title of 2009 and his second overall Memorial championship, having previously won the event in 2007. Cabrera's sponsors at Bridgestone Golf and Cobra were thrilled with his victory, expressing confidence in his ability to consistently contend in future events. Congratulations to Gerald Cabrera, the 2009 Memorial champion!

On the other hand, John Nunes' quest for victory at The Memorial was once again foiled, finishing as the runner-up for the third consecutive year. Like Cabrera, Nunes had not been in contention for some time, but Las Positas' challenging course seemed to suit his game. Despite a shaky front nine, Nunes finished with a score of 47, including a par on the notoriously difficult 9th hole. He turned up the heat on the back nine, scoring 40 with pars on 11, 12, and 18, as well as birdies on 14 and 17. However, in the end, Nunes fell short by just one stroke, finishing at 6-under. Nunes could only laugh as he reflected on another missed 5-foot putt on the 18th hole that cost him the Memorial title. Such moments are what make The Memorial so memorable. Nunes' sponsors at Nike, Ping, and Hawaiian Sun expressed optimism about his future prospects, believing he will eventually secure a Memorial title and regularly contend in tournaments as expected.

Jimmy Huang demonstrated consistent play yet again, finishing in 3rd place with an impressive 4-under par at the tournament. Despite still seeking his first title, Huang showcased his skills with four pars and a birdie on the 18th hole, resulting in a score of 89. Huang's performance has been steadily improving, and he is closing in on the leaders, Ted Saguindel and his two-time champion brother, Johnny, on the FedEx Cup leaderboard. With only a few events left on the 2009 schedule, Huang is aiming for a strong finish, similar to his birdie on the 18th hole last Sunday.

Ted Saguindel, the reigning Masters of Hack champion, displayed his prowess once again, scoring an impressive 2-under par 85 with nine pars, earning him a respectable 4th place finish. While he did not secure the title at Las Positas, his strong performance is likely to keep him at the top of the FedEx Cup standings with only a few events left to play. Saguindel's putting and iron play are currently in top form, making him a favorite contender at the upcoming Delta Classic next month.

For the second consecutive event Eric Dolojan was one stroke shy of Ted Saguindel this time posting a 1-under par 86 for 5th place.

Defending champion Steve Hom struggled to post 97. He’ll look to bounce back at The Delta Classic.
