High Winds = High Scores

In a display of remarkable skill and determination, Gerald Cabrera braved challenging conditions, including 30mph winds, to post an impressive 3-under 94 and claim victory at The Greater Brentwood Classic. Cabrera's performance, highlighted by pars on holes 2, 7, and 17, along with 9 bogeys, proved to be enough to hold off newcomer Steve Hom, who made an impressive debut with a 1-under 96 to secure a second-place finish.

With this win, Cabrera secured his 4th title, bringing him within 2 titles of the all-time leader, John Nunes, who holds 6 titles. Cabrera also showcased his exceptional skills on the final stretch (holes 13-18), finishing with a remarkable 32. The news of Cabrera's victory was met with approval by King Cobra and Bridgestone executives, who could only grin at his success.

Steve Hom made an immediate impact on the tour, showcasing his talent by starting strong with pars on holes 1 and 2, and a birdie on hole 3, leading him to win the first turn (holes 1-6) with an impressive score of 30. Hom's excellent driving and play around the greens were noteworthy, as he was the only other player to finish under par. As a result, Titleist executives were seen following Hom from the 18th green to the parking lot, indicating potential sponsorship opportunities for the rising star before The Players.

Wayne Validum demonstrated his skills and finished in 3rd place, showing promising potential for future tournaments. Despite facing challenges with 7 bogeys and 3 pars, Validum remained in contention throughout the round. He particularly excelled on the second turn (holes 7-12), where he posted the best score of the field with a 28. Validum is undoubtedly a player to watch at next month's The Players.

Steve Jacobson, a 4-time champion, posted a 7-over 104, earning him a respectable 4th place finish. Despite facing difficulties on holes 6, 14, and 18, which prevented him from posting par, Jacobson remained consistent throughout the round. His sponsors at Fosters expressed confidence in his abilities, citing his successful performance last year when he won The Players and The U.S. Hackers Open back-to-back. Jacobson will undoubtedly be a formidable contender at next month's The Players.

Defending Champion Jason Kremin had a challenging round, posting an 8-over 105. Despite encountering early troubles, Kremin managed to record 6 bogeys and a par. With his sponsors Prilosec, Heavy Putter, Nike, and Cleveland Golf showing confidence in his abilities, Kremin will be aiming for his elusive second win at The Players next month.

John Nunes, a six-time champion, also faced difficulties during his round, posting a 9-over 106. Despite making an impressive birdie on the par three 8th, it was a tough day for Nunes. However, he remains loyal to his famous Sasquatch driver from Nike, which he plans to unleash again soon as he looks to add a seventh title at The Players.

Cisco Bellez's performance was a mix of ups and downs, recording the most pars (4) among all players but also adding four bogeys. Troubles on holes 3 and 14 affected Bellez's overall score, resulting in a 10-over 107. If he can avoid such troubles in the future, Bellez could be a strong contender for multiple title wins this year, starting with The Players next month.

Rob Pierce, after opening with a par, struggled in the challenging conditions with 30mph winds, finishing with a 17-over 121. Pierce will be looking to bounce back in the upcoming tournaments.

Robert Holmes had another disappointing round, posting a score of 121 while managing only two pars and three bogeys. He also faced challenges with losing golf balls and a disagreement with his sponsors over ball usage. ExtraStrength Tylenol, his sponsor, mentioned that they will review his scorecard as they consider his contract for the rest of the year.

Once again, the tournament was a success, and special thanks were extended to Gerald, Rob Pierce, and Steve Hom for their contributions leading up to tournament day.
