Nunes and Kevin H. Share PGAHT Championship With One Stroke Win Over Bellez (AGAIN...)

The day began as a mad scramble but ended as another successful PGAHT tournament, with the outcome decided on the 18th green. Last-minute fill-in Kevin H (last name not confirmed before this post) joined the competition and shot a score of 92, including a second turn winning 26, tying with John Nunes, who claimed his second consecutive championship. Nunes had an impressive performance, splitting the home-stretch with Jason Kremin, both posting scores of 29. Cisco Bellez took the first turn, finishing the opening 6-holes in 30 (Cisco, I have your envelope).

The mysterious Kevin H. filled out the second foursome, ensuring the MAJOR GREENSFEE DISCOUNT (Thanks Wayne) and secured a share of the PGAH Championship. Kevin played bogey golf for most of the day, but made a move by paring holes 8, 9, 10, and 11, en route to a second turn winning 26. Despite some setbacks with blow-ups on holes 17 and 18, which negated his birdie on 16, Kevin's performance was still good enough for a share of the title.

John Nunes claimed his second consecutive championship, grinding out a score of 92 to match Kevin H. Nunes faced challenges with club selection on his approaches, overshooting a few greens, but his struggles on holes 3, 7, and 18 weren't enough to prevent him from achieving his tour record 6th career win.

Favorite, Cisco Bellez, remained in contention until the end, taking the first turn in 30 and finishing just one stroke off the pace with a score of 93. However, a snowman (8) on hole 18 negated his birdie on hole 15 and eagle on the par-5 17th, costing him the title. This is the second time he has missed the title by one stroke, having also done so last month at The Delta Classic. Bellez will have one more chance to break through next month at Callippe.

Steve Jacobson played steady golf throughout the day, recording pars on holes 2, 7, 8, and 15, but was unable to make the big shot necessary to win. He missed winning the first turn, the home-stretch, and the title by one stroke, finishing with a score of 93. Nonetheless, his performance shows that he is close to securing his fourth title.

Wayne Validum encountered some trouble on holes 1, 6, 10, 13, and 14, finishing with a score of 108. However, his best save of the day was coming up with the coupon that allowed everyone to save $27 on their rounds, which deserves recognition in itself. Thanks Wayne, it was a championship-worthy effort.

The quest for 100 continues for Robert Holmes, who struggled on the first turn with a score of 42, but settled down to finish the home-stretch with a respectable 34. His final score of 113 was disappointing, as it was 4 over the 109 over/under, but he showed improvement as the day went on. He will have one last chance at Callippe to reach his goal.

Josh Westaby made his return to the tour with a score of 123, which may have been disappointing for him, but he did contribute by bringing Kevin H into the competition, as well as saving $27 and gaining more tournament experience.

In the end, it was a great tournament on a fantastic course. Those who missed it truly missed out. Rancho Solano is an excellent course and is likely to remain in the tournament rotation.

The new format made things interesting as 4 of 8 players were able to win and those of us who didn't, well we weren't even CLOSE and didn't deserve to. We will use the same format as we close the year at Callippe Preserve next month.
